The Asbestos Hazardous Emergency Response Act (AHERA) was enacted into law by Congress in 1987. The Act mandates that all public schools K-12, identify and determine the type, location, quantity and condition of all asbestos containing materials (ACM) in the school buildings and to develop an asbestos management plan (AMP) to oversee and/or abate all ACM present in the District’s schools. This high priority concern is a task of major proportion that requires the help and cooperation of everyone attending, working in and visiting the buildings. For the schools to abide by these laws the District and the Districts Exterminator Company (International Exterminator Co.) has instituted a policy that prohibits the technicians from using anything other than bait materials and monitoring traps in the schools. The new legislation establishes that the use of certain pesticides are restricted or may in the future be restricted to use only by or under the supervision of persons certified in accordance with the Act.
